Learn how to sew woven labels onto handmade gifts so every project looks finished and personal. Includes placement, stitching and care tips for sew-in labels.
Quick answer
Sew woven labels into a seam allowance for a clean, hidden finish, or stitch them flat when the label is meant to be seen. Match your thread to the label background and test placement before you commit.
Why placement decides the finish
Where you put a woven label changes how the gift feels. A label tucked into a seam allowance looks like it came from a small studio; a label stitched flat on the outside reads as a deliberate design feature. Neither is wrong, but mixing the two on the same project can look accidental.
Think about how the item will be used. A quilt or cushion gets handled and washed often, so a label buried in a seam is less likely to catch. A pouch, keyring or gift tag can carry a visible label because it is rarely put through heavy wear.
How to sew a woven label onto a handmade gift
- Choose the placement: Decide whether the label will sit inside a seam or flat on the surface. Fold the label in half and pin it along the seam line, or lay it flat where you want it to show. Pin first, then step back and look at the whole project before you sew.
- Position the label in the seam: If you are sewing into a seam, tuck the folded label between the fabric layers with the raw edges aligned. The folded edge should face into the project so the text reads correctly when the seam is opened. Check the text direction before you sew; it is easy to place a label upside down.
- Stitch the label in place: Sew along the seam line with a standard seam allowance, catching the label in the stitching. For a flat label, use a small running stitch or backstitch close to the label edge. Use a thread colour that matches the label background, not the fabric, for the neatest look.
- Secure the ends: Backstitch at the start and end of the label stitching so the label cannot pull loose. If the label is flat, stitch all the way around the edge or just across the top and bottom. A few extra backstitches now prevent the label from lifting after washing.
- Finish and press: Trim any loose threads and press the area gently from the wrong side. Avoid pressing directly on the label with a hot iron if you are unsure how the weave will react. Press on a scrap first if the label is a colour you cannot replace.
Product facts
- Woven Labels - I Love You: Each label measures 3 inches long by 5/8 inch wide and comes pre-cut with heat-sealed ends. The narrow width fits standard seam allowances, and the sealed ends mean you can skip extra fray-checking before you sew.
