Learn how to apply Sublime Stitching's LOTERIA Big Sheet iron-on transfers to fabric, with step-by-step instructions and tips for best results.
Quick answer
You can apply LOTERIA Big Sheet transfers to any cotton, linen, or poly-cotton fabric using a hot, dry iron. The key is pre-washing your fabric and setting the iron to the cotton setting without steam.
Why pre-washing matters
Iron-on transfers bond permanently, so any shrinkage after application will distort your design. Pre-wash and dry your fabric the same way you plan to launder the finished piece.
Fabric limitations
These transfers work best on natural or natural-blend fabrics. Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon, which can melt under the heat required for transfer. If you must use a synthetic blend, test on a hidden corner first.
Step-by-step application
- Prepare your fabric: Pre-wash and iron your fabric to remove any sizing or wrinkles. Place it on a hard, heat-resistant surface like a wooden ironing board. Skip pre-washing and the transfer may pucker after the first wash.
- Preheat your iron: Set a dry iron to the cotton setting (high heat). Do not use steam. Wait until the iron is fully hot before proceeding. A cool iron will not transfer the design fully; steam can cause ink to bleed.
- Position the transfer sheet: Cut out the desired design from the Big Sheet. Place it ink-side down on your fabric. Use a few pins or a heat-safe tape to hold it in place. If the sheet shifts during ironing, the design will appear blurred or doubled.
- Apply firm, even pressure: Press the iron down firmly on the transfer for 15–20 seconds without moving it. Lift and repeat on adjacent areas until the entire design has been pressed. Sliding the iron can smear the transfer; always lift and reposition.
- Peel while warm: Carefully lift one corner of the transfer sheet to check adhesion. If the design has transferred, peel the sheet away slowly. If not, press for another 10 seconds. Waiting until the sheet cools can make peeling more difficult and may lift some ink.
- Let the transfer cure: Allow the transferred design to cool completely before handling or stitching. Wash the fabric gently by hand for the first few washes to set the ink. Rubbing or folding the fabric while warm can cause the transfer to smudge.
