Quick Answer

For best results with iron on embroidery transfers, use smooth, natural-fiber fabrics like cotton or linen, and always pre-wash and press before transferring.

Fabric Choice Matters

Iron on transfers rely on heat to bond the pattern to the fabric. Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and cotton blends hold the transfer well because they can withstand the heat needed for the adhesive to activate. Synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon can melt or become shiny under a hot iron, so they are not ideal. If you must use a synthetic blend, test on a scrap piece first and use a lower heat setting.

Textured fabrics like fleece or heavy knits can also cause issues because the transfer may not make full contact with the surface. Smooth, tightly woven fabrics give the crispiest lines. If you are stitching on a textured fabric, consider using a stabilizer or placing a pressing cloth over the transfer to help it adhere evenly.

Pre-Wash and Press

Always pre-wash your fabric before transferring. This removes sizing and any shrinkage that could distort the design. After washing, press the fabric flat with a hot iron to remove wrinkles. A smooth, flat surface is essential for the transfer to stick evenly. If the fabric has wrinkles, the transfer may not adhere in those areas, leaving gaps in the design.

Step-by-Step Transfer Process

  1. Pre-wash and press your fabric: Wash and dry the fabric to remove sizing and prevent shrinkage, then iron it flat. Do not use fabric softener as it can leave a residue that blocks the transfer. Check that the fabric is completely smooth before moving on.
  2. Cut out the design: Cut around the design you want to transfer, leaving a small margin. This prevents excess paper from catching the iron and causing uneven heat. Trim close but not too close to the design lines to avoid cutting into the pattern.
  3. Position the transfer face down: Place the transfer with the printed side facing down on the fabric. Use a ruler to center it or align it with your fabric's grain. If you are using a design with text, remember it will appear reversed on the fabric. Double-check the placement before ironing; you cannot reposition once the heat is applied.
  4. Iron with firm pressure: Set your iron to the cotton or linen setting (no steam) and press down firmly for 10–15 seconds. Move the iron slowly over the entire transfer, applying even pressure. Do not slide the iron back and forth, as this can shift the transfer. If you are using a pressing cloth, place it over the transfer to protect it and help distribute heat.
  5. Let it cool and peel: Allow the transfer to cool completely before peeling off the paper. Peel slowly and carefully. If any part of the design did not transfer, place the paper back and re-iron that area with more pressure. Peel a corner first to check if the transfer is complete before removing the whole paper.
