Learn how to use carbon transfer paper to trace embroidery patterns onto fabric. Step-by-step guide with tips for clean, smudge-proof lines.

Quick answer

Carbon transfer paper lets you trace any embroidery pattern onto fabric in minutes. Place the paper carbon-side down on your fabric, lay the pattern on top, and trace with a stylus or pen. Use gray sheets for light fabrics and white sheets for dark fabrics. The lines are smudge-proof and stay visible as you stitch.

What to Know Before You Start

Carbon transfer paper works best on smooth, tightly woven fabrics like cotton, linen, or quilting cotton. It does not work well on thick or spongy fabrics such as t-shirts or denim—for those, you will need a stabilizer. The lines from carbon paper do not wash out, so place your design carefully. You can reuse each sheet multiple times until the carbon coating fades.

You will need your carbon transfer paper, a printed pattern, fabric, a hard work surface, and a stylus or ballpoint pen. Tape helps keep everything from shifting. A light box or bright window is optional but useful for checking placement.

Choosing the Right Color Sheet

Carbon transfer paper comes in gray and white. Use gray sheets on light-colored fabrics so the lines show clearly. Use white sheets on dark fabrics so the marks are visible. Using the wrong color can make your tracing hard to see or leave unwanted marks. Each pack from Sublime Stitching includes both colors so you are ready for any fabric.

How to Transfer an Embroidery Pattern with Carbon Paper

  1. Prepare your work surface and materials: Place your fabric right side up on a hard, flat surface. A table or cutting mat works well. Have your printed pattern, carbon transfer paper, tape, and stylus ready. Checkpoint: A soft surface like a towel will prevent the carbon from making a clean line.
  2. Position the carbon paper and pattern: Cut a piece of carbon transfer paper slightly larger than your design. Slide it between the fabric and your pattern with the carbon side facing down toward the fabric. Tape all layers in place so nothing shifts. Checkpoint: If you are using a light box, place it under the fabric to help you see the pattern alignment before taping.
  3. Trace the design firmly and evenly: Using a stylus or a ballpoint pen, trace over every line of your pattern. Apply steady, moderate pressure. Lift the tape occasionally to check that the lines are transferring clearly. Common mistake: Pressing too hard can tear the paper or leave thick, messy lines. Too light and the design will be faint. Practice on a scrap first.
  4. Remove the paper and check your lines: Carefully peel off the tape and lift the pattern and carbon paper. Your design should be visible as a clean, smudge-proof line on the fabric. If any part is missing, reposition and trace again. Checkpoint: Because the lines do not wash out, double-check placement before you start stitching. You can always add more lines, but you cannot erase them.
  5. Start stitching or store the fabric: Once the transfer is complete, you can begin embroidering immediately. If you need to store the fabric, roll it loosely so the carbon lines do not rub off onto other surfaces. Verdict: Carbon transfer paper gives you a durable guide that lasts through your entire project, making it a reliable choice for detailed embroidery patterns.
